The sound I do not want to hear.

I shiver in the dark, I daren't turn on the light.

I fear you will see me, awake, and enter.

I try to quieten my breathing, my thoughts even.

I hear the tread on the stairs, and the stagger.

I pray that you will just walk straight tonight.

Worthless prayers, God leaves me here to rot.

As quietly as I can, I try to hide.

I can't be saved by God or man tonight I fear.

I huddle into he corner and touch my cheek.

My hand comes away wet and I know I am crying.

The door opens. I pray. No answer. You see me.

“Daddy please no” I sob to no avail.
